some time ago, on 15 March last year, we visited the mountain of Montserrat. It was a good day, and spring, ideal to walk among these strange rock formations.
As we approached by car, I took this photo of the summit, which does not do justice to its size, but it explains quite well why the mountain is called Mount Sawing in Catalan.
Located 50 kms. Barcelona, Montserrat is undoubtedly the rarest mountain in Catalonia. By car there are two possible ways. Decided to go to the west, and we were lucky, because after we realized that the other side there was a queue of cars. Of course, we had a little mountain road.
We left the car and went walking in the area of the monastery. Yes, a mountain so strange he could not lack its own church, justified with a legend very convenient. Apparently, a Saturday afternoon of 880 appeared in the sky strange lights, and going to see inside a cave, they found a statue of the Virgin. Wanted to take a more practical, but the rock, miraculously, it was very heavy, and the bishop said something like "you do not want to move? Well, here you stay. But I will build a monastery around so you do not leak" . Now, good news and bad. The good is that they could build. The bad news is that the image does not display anything.
These columns reminded me Güell Park:
We walked down the main street of this small village, located inside the mountain at high altitude.
From the viewpoint is part of the road. Some people up the mountain of 1236 meters on foot.
A train comes through here, and from the station trains leave a few zip to the top.
And here, next to a Benedictine monastery, are represented nerve of Liberty. Luckily we have the Church to free us, if not ...
What a feeling of freedom, peace, brotherhood and joy that gives me the bishop corpse ...
ate sandwiches in the sun, and entered the monastery / shrine.
In the center of the photo, on the first floor, where you see the light, the statue of the Virgin of Montserrat. At least a hundred people were queue to walk past her and touch her or kiss her. It is the most famous virgin of Catalonia, and is called the moreneta (brunette) by their color. Actually, not that it was black in origin, but the varnish is dark after 8 centuries of handling.
Although it was hot, we started to climb a mountain road. This is the view from the first viewpoint:
The route was steep at times.
Perhaps this is the famous image of the Virgin which were for so many centuries. Or the Holy Spirit:
Apparently, this mountain is so rare forms that, long ago, all this was under the waters of a river sediment was deposited. When reached the Pyrenees, the old riverbed also rose, to become Montserrat.
When we ran out of water, we decided to return, almost dehydrated, the monastery. We walked to the train station, intending to climb one of the peaks.
formations located directly behind the buildings are impressive:
I see on the left, a kind of mummy against the wall. Am I crazy?
We reached one of the peaks, but the last train went down in 20 minutes, so we did not have much time to walk. The wind up there was considerable. Lost between the mountain you could see some adventurers.
Here is one of the trails, it seems easier than we had done a few hours before:
The train line, at the end of its trajectory
The vast, forested Catalonia
down there, one people after another
already getting late, so we went back to the car. Along the way, a sculpture
Goodbye, Montserrat. I'll see from the highway, at least once a month, best in summer because in winter there is always a cloud in your head.
And so ends my one-day visit to Montserrat. It is a spectacular site, ideal for hiking, climbing, or just to spend a Sunday afternoon the sun.
